Buying storage bins at Dollar Tree is a no-brainer. They're inexpensive and come in a myriad of colors — plus there are so many smart ways to use Dollar Tree storage bins to organize your home. You could pick up a dozen bins, and your wallet will still remain intact. The only downside? They look exactly like they cost a dollar — cheap and plastic-y. Enter TikTok user @homegoodiys, who came up with a creative way to make a basic Dollar Tree bin look like a high-end find using a straw hat. Yup, all it takes is a bit of unthreading and gluing to create a chic woven basket like the ones all over social media.
We love that it's easy to recreate, budget-friendly, and doubles as décor. Plus, the result of this rope upgrade looks so chic that no one will know it's a DIY! @homegoodiys specifically used the Flexible Plastic Storage Tubs with Handles, but really, you can use any Dollar Tree trash cans. It could be square-shaped (like these Dollar Tree Plastic Storage Baskets), without handles, or even an old yogurt bucket if you're feeling resourceful. Grab a straw hat you don't mind tearing apart, your glue gun, and scissors. Add basket labels to the list if you'd like to step up your organization game even further once the bin is all dressed up. The Mr. Pen Basket Labels Clip On Set is a great pick, in this case.
How to spruce up Dollar Tree bins using a straw hat
Start by unraveling the entire hat. To do this, simply snip off the threads on the outermost brim and swirl the hat round and round until you have a long, curly strip of straw. Give the bin a quick wipe if it isn't clean already. Then, off we go to the next step: wrapping the bin. Starting at the bottom, glue the "straw ribbon" to the container about a quarter way up. Feel free to cover the entire surface if yours is on the smaller side. With that done, use the remaining strips to cover the handles (if there are any). And that's about it for the most part.
If you aren't a fan of the bin's original color, you can always spray paint it before adding the rope. Your sun hat doesn't even have to be the standard beige. Throw in a black pattern to make it two-toned. Dollar Tree also has colorful straw hats in blue, pink, green, and more — perfect for adding a pop of color to any room. The base could be one color and the top part another. Or, maybe keep the bottom and top neutral and the middle a playful hue.
Again, this DIY is super easy yet stylish — there's no reason not to give multiple baskets a makeover, just like @homegoodiys did. You can use them to organize deep shelves around your home, serving as a catch-all for everything from toys in the living room to pantry items in the kitchen. Don't forget to add the labels so you know exactly what is in each bin.
