Take Old Jar Lids From Trash To Treasure With A Creative DIY For Adorable Decor
If you love crafting and repurposing things for DIYs, you may find that you have quite a few random objects lying in your perfectly organized art supply storage system. From scraps of fabric to random stickers, they may seem pointless to keep, but you can reuse them for a DIY that also repurposes coffee jar lids. With this simple project, you'll transform an old jar lid from trash to an adorable plant-inspired hanging wall décor piece.
Start by collecting some coffee jar lids. You can upcycle metal or plastic lids, but just know that the painting process is slightly different depending on the material. While collecting, think about how many lids you will need. You can use one lid and create this project once, or save a few different sizes to make multiple statement pieces in your home. Once you've found lids you like, you will need to prep them for painting. This includes cleaning the lid, and if it is plastic, sanding it with 220 grit sandpaper to make sure the paint sticks to the surface. Then, cover the surface with a primer and a few coats of your desired color. If you want, you could even use the front of the lid as a unique canvas, and hang it on the wall. While you can take the time to seal the project, it is not necessary. You could also use spray paint instead of hand-painting — just put your can of spray paint in hot water first and thank us later.
How to reuse coffee jar lids for this home décor project
Once the jar is painted, get creative with your crafting supplies. Use hot glue to add a ribbon or piece of rope around the inside edge of the lid. You can then use a leftover piece of fabric to create a small pocket by gluing the edges to the back of the lid. Use a plain fabric or something unique that matches your walls. Fill the pocket with some styrofoam and faux plants or flowers. Then, add some pieces of faux grass or moss to the base of the flowers to hide the styrofoam. If you want, cover the back of the lid with another piece of fabric and hang it to the wall with some beads or a ribbon. Or, skip decorating the back and attach the piece directly the wall.
While this plant-inspired décor is certainly cute, it is not the only way to decorate your lids. Think about your home and where you would hang this project before beginning. If you have a beach-themed house, you could use rope around the entire edge, paint nautical symbols in the center, and hang the lid in a bathroom. If your home is more rustic, you could use this technique of reusing fruit scraps and turning them into bespoke wall décor – add them to the center of your jar lids for a completely upcycled DIY for your kitchen. Rather than heading to the craft store to find something new, get creative with what you have lying around the house to make a cute décor piece perfect for your home!
