Why These Iconic States Are Experiencing A Gardening Boom In 2025

Considering the size of the United States and how diverse the climate and environments across its different regions are, it's understandable why some states are more fit for gardening than others. States with environments conducive to growing plants and trees readily stand out as hubs for home gardening. World Population Review has named the top gardening-friendly states for 2025, and unsurprisingly, California, Washington, and Florida ranked among the highest, with the Golden State taking the lead. Climate, soil quality, and long growing seasons make these three natural choices for both amateur gardeners and seasoned growers.

However, different factors appear to fuel this gardening boom in these three iconic states. For instance, California's coastal towns offer year-round growing opportunities for tomatoes, peppers, lemons, persimmons, and a variety of flowers, including the beautiful orange poppy found all across the Golden State. Washington, while cooler, provides the perfect rainy conditions for fruit trees like apples and pears, as well as cottage-style gardens rich in herbs and flowers. On the other hand, Florida enjoys mild winters, abundant rain, and a subtropical climate that supports almost everything — like sweet corn, turnips, strawberries, and beautiful mahogany trees. All these give homeowners a chance to experiment with plants rarely grown elsewhere in the country.

How homeowners benefit from having a garden

While climate and geography may explain why urban gardening thrives in California, Washington, and Florida, the real boom stems from the benefits homeowners and residents get from maintaining green spaces at home. More than beautifying the surroundings, gardens increase the value of homes. Studies show that professional landscaping and well-maintained gardens can increase a home's resale value by 10–20%. Even properties without established gardens can gain appeal when potential buyers spot good soil and adequate sun exposure.

Another advantage of gardening is that it is good for mental health. Numerous studies have already explored how green spaces reduce stress and lower anxiety, as well as lighten mood. They are also said to increase motivation as homeowners feel responsible for taking care of their plants. At the same time, since gardening involves physical activity, it can serve as a form of regular exercise, which is one of the surefire ways to stay in shape and be healthy.

Beyond the financial value and mental health benefits, it seems one of the driving forces for people to garden in 2025 is sustainability. Based on the latest statistics available, around 55% or 72 million U.S. households maintain a garden. This translates to over 185 million people engaging in the outdoor activity. A third of this figure is composed of millennials who focus on food gardening and houseplants. Gen X gardeners also engage in this activity to grow their own vegetables and increase curb appeal.
