A two-to-one arrangement simply means having one large furniture piece that anchors the room, paired with two smaller accent pieces. In a living room, this typically translates to a sofa with two chairs. Depending on the space, the chairs can be placed across from the sofa or on either side. In a narrow or small living room, positioning the chairs directly across from the sofa usually works best as it keeps the layout streamlined and makes conversation easy. In a wider space, however, it often looks more balanced to have the chairs flank the sofa on each side. This arrangement provides plenty of seating while making conversation easy, creating a casual, open layout. The symmetrical design also makes the room appear more visually balanced, which is known to create a calming effect.

The two-to-one ratio works particularly well when there is an obvious focal point in the room, such as a fireplace or picture window. In many cases, it works best to position the sofa to face the focal point, then add the chairs on either side. You also don't want to space your seating so far apart that it makes it awkward to carry on a conversation. As a general rule, aim for 8 to 10 feet between the sofa and other seating. To make the room feel cohesive, you should also choose chairs that match. Pieces that are vastly different sizes, patterns, or colors can throw off the balance. You should also consider size when choosing the right sofa and decorating with accent chairs – the scale of the furniture should feel right for the room and be balanced with each other.
