15 Surprising Ways To Use Dryer Sheets In Your Bedroom And Closet

Dryer sheets are a simple and easy way to add softness to your clothes and reduce static in the tumble dryer. But beyond this everyday purpose, dryer sheets have a multitude of other uses around the home and, in particular, in your bedroom and closet. From removing deodorant stains on your clothes to freshening up smelly shoes, these simple little sheets can simplify many household tasks. We'll take a look at the most important places to use dryer sheets in your bedroom that will make life a lot easier.

With manufacturers increasingly looking at plant-based and biodegradable ingredients for dryer sheets, using them around the house is also a more ethically sound option than it may have been in the past. And, with dryer sheets being reasonably priced and easy to buy in bulk, this could also be a budget-friendly cleaning option for those looking to cut costs and save money.

Slip a dryer sheet into your pillowcase

With most dryer sheets being scented, it's easy to pick one up with a smell that appeals to you. And, for an easy way to make your home smell good, just slip a dryer sheet into your pillowcase or bed cushion. The scent from the dryer sheet will slowly diffuse through your bedroom, reducing the need to add in any other artificial scents. Do note, though, that we wouldn't recommend trying this hack if you're especially sensitive to fragrance.

Remove deodorant marks from clothes

This dryer sheet hack saves clothes in a pinch, making it incredibly easy to remove annoying deodorant stains from your clothing. We've all been there — you put on a clean, tight fitting top and, as you drag it down your body, deodorant marks appear. But it's simple to remove them with an unused dryer sheet. Simply rub the dryer sheet over the mark or marks and watch as they vanish before your eyes.

Remove pet hair from bedding

Many of us love the company of our furry friends on our bed, and quite a few others of us don't get a choice in the matter. But, delightful as these additions can be, any pet owner will be familiar with how quickly your bed linen can become 99% fur. To remove fur quickly, simply take a new or used dryer sheet and rub it over bedding. This will loosen the fur significantly and make it far easier to clear up with either a clothes brush or lint roller.

Remove static from clothing

Most of us know that dryer sheets are a great way to get rid of static cling in your laundry, but they can also be used on dry clothing in your wardrobe that just won't stop trying to cling to its neighbor. All you need to do is rub a fresh dryer sheet on the underside of clothing, which will stop it sticking to both itself and other clothing around it.

Repel dust

Bedroom furniture can accumulate a lot of dust and, whilst it's relatively easy to run a duster around or spray some polish, the frequency with which dust returns can be annoying. But rubbing a dryer sheet over surfaces can help to repel dust, which will keep your surfaces spic and span for longer. This could cut down on your cleaning, which is always a good thing.

Freshen up smelly shoes

The clever way to use dryer sheets to eliminate smelly shoe odors involves placing a scented dryer sheet into shoes or boots that have become a little stinky. You can also use half a sheet for smaller pumps or kids' shoes. And for flip flops or sandals, wrap a dryer sheet around the shoe and secure it with a rubber band. This means you can store your shoes in your bedroom wardrobe without stinking up the entire room.

Clean your hairbrushes and combs

Having your hairbrush or comb on hand in the bedroom to neaten up your look after you've gotten dressed is one of life's little essentials. But over time, hairbrushes and combs can begin to look a little tired and even grubby. To revitalize them, simply place a couple of dryer sheets in a bowl and add warm water. Leave your hairbrush and comb to soak for a few hours, and they'll look as if you just purchased them from the shop.

Scare away bed bugs

Bed bugs are not an infestation that anyone wants to deal with. As the name suggests, these pesky creatures generally make their home in your bed, staying close to their immobile food source: you, when you're peacefully asleep. Although we'd recommend professional treatment if you are unlucky enough to end up with bed bugs, placing a dryer sheet between your mattress and bed will deter these bugs from settling.

Stop shoes squeaking

In fairness, a squeaky shoe isn't going to keep you awake at night, but it will be irritating every time you take a shoe in and out of your wardrobe or walk around in it. To remove the squeak, simply take a dryer sheet and rub it over the soles of your shoes. Because dryer sheets have a slight residue on them, this should help to reduce the slickness, which is what causes the squeak.

Freshen drawers

One would hope that you're only putting clean clothes into your chest of drawers, but even clean clothes can benefit from a little boost of scent when they're folded up in an enclosed space for months at a time. Pop a scented dryer sheet in your dresser drawers to keep clothes smelling great and free of static. And remember, you can always take a few on vacation with you to pop into hotel drawers as well.

Freshen your gym bag

If we're being honest with ourselves, the gym bag probably sits in the bottom of our wardrobe unused more often than it should, and even though your dirty gym clothes will go in the wash, smells can linger after a workout. Popping a fresh dryer sheet into your gym bag will help to absorb any smells and will also keep your bag fresher for longer.

Clean headboards

Your headboard could be one of the dirtiest places in your bedroom thanks to its ability to collect dust and debris. If you have a fabric headboard, a dryer sheet will help to remove clinging dust and hairs before you follow up with a quick vacuum. Dryer sheets will also work well on wooden headboards — use one to help repel dust and stop it from settling so frequently.

Cleaning bedroom baseboards

Vacuuming or sweeping your floors will get rid of most dirt, dust and debris, but the action can also throw up particles and hair that will cling to your baseboards around the edges of your bedroom walls. Instead of buying expensive wipes to clean up anything left behind, you can simply use a dryer sheet to wipe over the baseboards. This will pick up any lingering mess.

Clean bedroom blinds

Bedroom blinds are a godsend for keeping your room dark at night, making it easier to sleep deeply. But they're not the easiest things to clean, and the gaps between slats can be thin. Dryer sheets are easy to slip between each slat for cleaning, and the coating on them will also leave a thin residue that helps to repel dirt and keep your blinds dust-free for longer periods of time.

Freshen up your laundry hamper

The best place to keep your laundry hamper at home is in the bedroom, but dirty clothes might not always smell that fragrant after having been worn all day. A scented dryer sheet is the answer here, as it will mask any smells and keep your laundry from smelling offensive in the room where you sleep. As you don't want to accidentally add the dryer sheet to the wash, we'd recommend tucking it inside a handle or in the lining (if there is one) so it will stay out of the way.
