DIYer Reveals How She Transforms A Dollar Tree Cutting Board Into Adorable Garden Decor

Your average garden flag is about what you'd expect –- a nicely-colored piece of cloth dangling from a loop-de-loop wire flagpole. But for one crafter, @TheDailyDIYer, the garden-variety garden flag became something more interesting when she swapped out the cloth flag for an embellished Dollar Tree cutting board. With the help of some vinyl decals, she transformed it into a family nameplate, which added a personal touch to her DIY outdoor décor. And given that a cloth garden flag is only expected to last three to six months, there's something to be said for making one out of a sturdier material so that it can be enjoyed longer.

If you'd like to make a stylish piece like this, you'll need to purchase a Dollar Tree Cooking Concepts Cutting Board and a Garden Collection Metal Flag Pole. If you have a decal maker, you'll need that to personalize the board with your name or well-wishes. If you don't, a set of stencils, some paint, and a few paintbrushes are a good substitute. The bamboo garden flag requires a few tools and metal fixtures before it's completely done. Some eye hooks and a package of Jot Metal Book Rings hook the sign to its Dollar Tree flag stand. You may find that you also need matte spray and fine-grade sandpaper to help you prepare the board for embellishment. Finally, be sure to get out your drill and have it outfitted with a bit that's small enough to create pilot holes for the screw hooks.

Making your Dollar Tree cutting board garden flag

The Dollar Tree cutting board is made from bamboo, a surface that tends to be naturally slick. This means you won't be able to add a decal or stencil paint on this decorative yard décor until you sand it a bit. This task can be done gently with your hands. Do not use a sander as it can cause damage. Once complete, the board will be ready to adorn. If you're proficient at hand-painting DIYs, consider creating a scene on the board to personalize it to your home, region, or the holiday. It's certainly a savvy way to incorporate art into your yard décor. For example, you could paint a red-white-and-blue flag design to celebrate Independence Day. Or add your family crest to the cutting board. You may want to use a coating of clear matte spray to protect the wooden flag once you're done painting.

After the artwork is completed, drill two pilot holes at the top of the board, then add the eye hooks to the holes. Place one of the binder rings onto each hook. Insert the Dollar Tree flag holder into the ground in its designated spot and hang the sign on the post by stringing the flag post's top wire through the binder O-rings. If you would like to see the flag once twilight starts to blanket the sky, you can purchase a Garden Collection Solar Metal Lantern for the flag holder.
