Aside from her flourishing career as a real estate agent, Heather Rae El Moussa (née Young) is also a fashion enthusiast, as seen in how she likes to dress up and showcase glamorous and head-turning looks both on her TV shows and in real life. One might even say that she doesn't leave the house without being all glammed up, based on her social media activity. It's no surprise then that one of El Moussa's biggest investments in her Newport Beach, California, home with husband Tarek El Moussa is their shared walk-in closet. The HGTV star, who knows how to make homes feel warm and cozy, has executed what appears to be one of the most practical and interesting renovations in closet history, with all the custom features she incorporated into the space.

From installing lights to illuminate the inside of her cabinets to stashing her leather handbags in dust bags with Polaroid tags for easy identification, Heather has done right by all of the closet storage and organizing rules. Luckily for her fans, she's also openly shared all the hacks and tricks she pulled off to make her walk-in a fully functional and sensible space for stowing apparel, accessories, and footwear. Here's a rundown of the custom features "The Flip Off" star used or added to her closet as part of the major renovations to her family home with Tarek prior to the HGTV couple's dreamhouse reveal in March 2023.

Dark wood finishes

In a June 2025 Instagram post, Heather Rae El Moussa gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the pre-renovation preparations for her shared closet with Tarek El Moussa. In the clip, the original color scheme of the walk-in was flat white and cream. After discussing with their designer, the couple opted to swap everything for dark wood finishes. In a follow-up shared three months later, the pair happily showcased the before-and-after transformation of their wardrobe, highlighting how the darker theme added a dramatic effect to the space. Side note: Darker tones are easier to maintain and clean than lighter shades.

Basket organizers

In the same before-and-after Instagram update, we spotted basket organizers on the top shelf of Heather Rae El Moussa's closet. Baskets offer stylish storage solutions in any space, so it's no surprise that she uses them to tuck away miscellaneous items, effectively preventing clutter. Based on the IG post and the exclusive tour of their dream home, as featured on Entertainment Tonight, El Moussa uses both wicker baskets and plastic organizers. Comparing these two types of storage solutions, the former is stylish, durable, and eco-friendly, while the latter is more practical, affordable, and comes in more shapes than regular baskets.

Dust bags with Polaroids

During their house tour for ET, Heather Rae El Moussa took a moment to highlight a simple hack that helps her identify her handbags even though each of them is kept inside a black dust bag. "Every single dust bag has a Polaroid, so I know which bag is in which dust bag, and then this protects them, so it keeps them nice," she explained to ET's Deidre Behar. Behar then praised the HGTV star for finding a way to preserve her bags so she could "pass [them] down to future generations."

Cabinet lighting

Since the couple chose dark wood finishes for the cabinetry in their closet, Heather Rae El Moussa incorporated generous lighting throughout the space to spare it from being too dark. From the top and sides of each shelf all the way to the recessed bottom of the wardrobe, she didn't skimp on LED lighting strips to illuminate every panel of the closet cabinets. With the lights on, it's easy for her to find any clothing item that's hanging on the closet rods. It also gives the shelves for her shoe collection and folded sweats and tops a more upscale vibe.

Translucent doors

In a TikTok video where she shows off the custom features of her closet, Heather Rae El Moussa is seen opening the large cabinet doors to her folded clothes, revealing that each glass panel is translucent. Glass-front cabinets are never out of style, but having translucent glass on the doors is seemingly a rare aesthetic among modern-style wardrobes. However, choosing this type of glass for her closet may have been every bit intentional for the "Selling Sunset" star. After all, frosted and textured glass doors are the perfect choice if one wants a balance of privacy and light transmission for their cabinets.

Valet rod

Another custom feature in the TikTok video is a pull-out or extendable valet rod Heather Rae El Moussa attached to one side of her wardrobe. As seen in the clip, she uses this feature to hang the clothes she's wearing for the day. This also provides a sleek way to sort out or separate garments when planning for the week. Since the rod is retractable, the metal shaft can be pushed in when not in use. If you want the same feature for your closet, we recommend grabbing this Firjoy 12-inch Valet Rod for Closet Pull Out on Amazon for $29.99.

Adjustable wall mirror

Just below the valet rod, Heather Rae El Moussa installed a rectangular, pull-out mirror. For obvious reasons, this custom feature is quite useful since it provides a full-length, functional mirror that's easy to conceal when not in use. Thanks to its adjustable slides and runners, El Moussa can swivel the mirror in different directions inside the walk-in closet, giving her the flexibility to move around while using the feature. It's perfect for checking one's outfit or makeup before leaving the house. Copy this feature by installing your very own Hideaway Full-Length Closet Mirror, available for $105.99 on Amazon.

Island with storage

Last but certainly not least, the real estate agent must have gotten the memo that, aside from the kitchen, a walk-in closet is the room that needs a central island. This custom storage solution is perfect for someone as fashionable as Heather Rae El Moussa since it provides her with a place to stash all of her accessories. Though she did not show what's inside the pull-out drawers of her island in her TikTok video, it's safe to assume that each compartment may be housing her prized possessions, like watches, necklaces, and other jewelry.
