Ditch The Sage Green Paint For A Neutral Color That Still Packs Personality

But, designers say, it's creeping toward the point of oversaturation, with home decor YouTube star Alexandra Gater telling Good Housekeeping in April 2026 that it now feels like the "millennial gray hue" that inhabited basically every living room for a stretch. The good news: There's an updated alternative that delivers the same fun-twist-on-a-neutral vibe and wide-ranging appeal, but with a little extra drama. Interior designer Nishia Shubert gives the green light to the deep olive of Benjamin Moore's Ivy League.

The brand describes it as a rich shade that evokes images of ivy-covered estates in autumn. And Shubert agrees it's a look worth falling for. "This is a lively, olive green that feels grounded yet playful," the founder and principal designer of Stay Interiors told Good Housekeeping, explaining why the hue passed her test with flying colors. "It's a great choice for bedrooms or even kitchen islands where you want a dose of personality that still feels approachable."

Of course, that's not the only solution for those who feel the grass may be greener, so to speak, with plenty of other shades in the emerald to pale mint range. Forest, turquoise, and hunter hues are among the best green paint colors for a vibrant home. And Danielle Davis, founder and principal designer at 56th Street Design Studio, told Good Housekeeping she's partial to a nature-inspired basil hue as a green paint alternative.

Though if you're a sage green purist, you don't need to rid your home of the tone entirely, with Davis noting it's okay to incorporate it throughout your space in some capacity. It's just not necessary to make the shade your spread's whole personality. To lightly decorate your home with soft sage green, consider the pigment for bedding, paired with other natural textures like wood or bamboo. Or add it as a pop of color throughout by opting for sage-hued throw pillows, blankets, window treatments, or even accent lamps.
