Turn Dollar Tree Laundry Baskets Into A Cute Blanket Storage Solution
We all love a good blanket, right? Whether it's a cozy throw to snuggle up in on the couch or a beautiful quilt laid out on the bed, blankets are a mainstay in every room of the home. But finding a good way to store them can be tricky. You want your blankets to be accessible but not tossed all over the living room or in chaotic piles across the floor. You also don't want to have to shell out tons of cash for a fancy organizer. What if you could DIY a blanket storage solution that's both chic and budget-friendly?
That's exactly what we're doing by turning a Dollar Tree laundry basket into a jute basket that makes a cute way to store blankets. You can pick up Dollar Tree's 16-inch Laundry Basket with Handles for $6 or the 11.5-inch Stacking Laundry Basket for $1.50. Either one will work for this project. You can also make a few baskets of varied sizes to use in different areas around the home. Armed with a roll of jute rope and a hot glue gun, you can make a laundry hamper that doubles as a stylish blanket storage for any room.
To really finish off the basket and give it a polished look, line the inside with a fabric of your choice, like cotton, linen, or even burlap. To keep costs down, you can repurpose something you already have and give new life to an old bed sheet with this Dollar Tree basket storage DIY by using it to line the inside of the basket. So grab your supplies and let's get started.
How to DIY a jute basket blanket storage solution on a budget
Jute baskets don't have to be expensive, and this DIY will show you just how to do it on a budget. Turn the laundry basket over and begin by gluing a line of jute rope all the way around the bottom of the basket. Continue to wrap the rope around, going up the basket. You don't have to glue down every inch, but adding glue once or twice per row will help secure the rope. Stop when you get about two inches from the top.
Next, we'll line the inside of the basket. You can use any material you'd like — purchased new from the fabric store or upcycling an old scarf, pillow case, or even a used throw blanket. Flip the basket right side up and place the fabric inside the basket. Allow the material to fold over the top rim of the basket by two inches, trimming it with scissors as needed. For baskets with handles, cut slits on either side so the handles can pass through when folded over the rim. Hot glue the folded-over portion to the outside of the basket.
Then, continue wrapping the rope all the way up the basket, covering the fabric that you just glued down. Be sure to hot glue the last row of rope all the way around the top. Then cut off any excess. If you are using the handled basket, you can wrap and glue rope around the handles so they match the rest of the basket.
