Transform Scrap Wood Pallets Into A Cheaper DIY Privacy Screen For Your Patio

For many of us, a patio is a space where you can retreat from your home, perhaps to read a book or relax on a cool summer night. That said, it's understandable that you'd want privacy, especially if you're near a busy sidewalk or a neighbor's patio. However, store-bought privacy fences can be expensive, and installation can drive those costs even higher. Enter scrap wood pallets. TikTok user almond_fairy8 shared a video showing how she transformed a stack of pallets into a budget-friendly privacy screen for her patio.

If you're up for a fun DIY, take a page from her book. You can stain a handful of pallets (and a few wooden boards) and secure them to your patio railing for a cheap and clever way to perk up your patio, while building a privacy screen you'll love. Scrap pallets can often be procured for free by contacting local businesses, including garden centers or furniture stores — but always examine them for bugs, contamination, and structural damage first. Once you have enough, you'll only need to purchase deck screws, a drill, and wood stain, such as this $13 Rust-Oleum Varathane American Walnut option.

A quart of stain typically covers about 150 square feet, so how much you'll need depends on your patio size and the number of coats applied. Additionally, you'll need a handful of 2-by-4-by-10-foot pressure-treated pine boards. Home Depot has these for about $9, and some locations may cut them for free if needed. Plan on using at least one 2-by-4-by-10-foot board for every pallet, plus an extra board where two pallet ends meet for added stability. You'll also want an extra set of hands for this project.

Establishing the layout and pulling it together

Be sure to clear off your patio and then lay down drop cloths for protection. While wearing protective gloves, set the pallets on the patio so their slats will sit horizontally against the railing once installed. Starting at one corner, line them all up against the railing to establish their spacing and positioning. You can then use painter's tape to mark where the wooden support boards will be placed against them. This step also helps you plan for extra pieces if the pallets don't line up evenly across your patio or if you'd like to add additional boards for support. Before attaching the pallets, make sure your existing railing is sturdy enough to support the additional weight.

If you find that your pallets aren't quite lining up right, you can build a simple pallet-style section from 2-by-4s to fill any gaps. Once you've confirmed your layout, have an assistant hold one pallet on top of the railing, while you position one of the boards in front of it. Then, using a marker or pencil, mark the pilot-hole locations on both pieces for future reference. Repeat this process for all the pallets and boards.

Follow this up by marking the placement spots for the pallets on your railing as well. After finalizing your layout, drill all of the pilot holes into the pallets and boards. The next step is adding your wood stain to all the pieces. If you're adding more than one coat, let each coat dry according to the stain manufacturer's directions before applying the next. Once everything has fully dried, work with your assistant to go one by one, securing the pallets and boards together around the patio railing. Make sure that each pallet and board is straight and tightly secured before moving on to the next.

Making it your own with color, lighting, and greenery

This pallet screen idea is just one way to create privacy in your outdoor space with a budget-friendly solution, and it can come together in a day or two. But even better, there are several different ways to build on this idea to create a more customized look. For example, let's say you prefer a hint of modernity and more color. Instead of using a natural wood-colored stain, you can opt for cool paint tones, such as pale gray or bluish-green.

This way, you can establish a modern look that still maintains a soft, natural vibe in the outdoor space. You can also use different colors for the wooden boards and pallets, choosing complementary tones or contrasting ones for a bolder look. Consider adding a few rows of string lights, such as the Joomer Solar Fairy Lights, and running them along the pallets for added ambiance and coverage.

These types of trendy ideas can help you create the perfect patio while maintaining the level of privacy you're after. You can also add a few faux hanging vines to the pallets once they're secured. Or better yet, wrap the vines around the boards for a more intentional look. If you're considering adding hanging potted plants, just be sure to go with lighter plants and pots to minimize the weight placed on the pallets.
