Bedrooms are one of the most important rooms in the home, as they are where we go to sleep and recharge. Unfortunately, all too often bedrooms can become a little too functional, and it's easy to forget the overall look and feel of them. However, creating a dreamy bedroom sanctuary you'll never want to leave is equally important. A big part of this is incorporating furniture and accessories that make the space feel warm and inviting.
A bedroom bench is a popular perching spot in a bedroom, either to put slippers on or as a place to take five minutes to breathe, but they can come with a hefty price tag. If you're feeling creative, you can actually craft your own DIY bedroom bench out of crates and plastic placemats, just like this clever lady, Yoduvh Essentials, has done on YouTube.
What you will need for this creative bedroom design project is a pack of plastic place mats that are adorned with a pattern of your choice, two medium sized plastic crates, sheets of plywood to cover your crates, a plank of wood for the seat, some foam, curtain drapery for the upholstery, a stapler, and a glue gun. Although this project may seem a little complicated, with some patience and creativity, it's a bedroom upgrade you can DIY in a weekend.
How to create your own bedroom bench with placemats
To start, grab your two crates and spray paint them a different color beforehand if you wish, however, this isn't a necessary step as they won't be on show. Place them at a distance from each other, depending on how long you'd like your bench to be. Cover the sides, top, and front with sheets of wood that have been cut to size, and screw them into place.
Next, decorate the front and sides with your plastic placemats by attaching them using a glue gun and stapler. For the front of the bench, cut the edges off your placemats so the pattern looks like it is repeated and glue them into place. For the upholstered seat, grab a sheet of 2-inch foam and glue it onto a piece of wood. Cover with your chosen material; curtain drapery works well for this. Wrap it around the foam and staple it into place. You can now rest your seat on top of the base without fixing it.
If patterned placemats feel too decorative for you, and you'd prefer more of a boho look, then you could use woven placemats instead to adorn your bedroom bench. Rattan, wicker, and any other woven natural material would be appropriate for achieving a boho style. These Terracotta Straw placemats from Walmart come in a pack of four for $20.99, and can go well with a beachy-colored fabric for the bench's top.
