Use Concrete Blocks To Build Easy And Simple Garden Tool Storage For Your Garage

If you do a fair bit of work in your yard and garden, you will most likely have quite a few long-handled tools, like spades, shovels, rakes, and brooms. These can be a bit challenging to store in your garage so that they don't get in the way. You can just lean them against the wall, but they could pose a tripping hazard if you accidentally knock one over. Plus, the cheaper plastic garden tool organizers you can buy aren't usually all that sturdy, unless you invest in a quality one, which could end up costing close to $100. But there is a much easier and cheaper way to keep your garage storage organized if you follow the advice of YouTuber DIY Dad Life and use three or more concrete blocks.

The creator takes three cored concrete blocks (the ones with the holes in them) and places them on top of each other so the holes line up. These blocks are available in a range of sizes from hardware stores like Lowe's at very affordable prices. For example, cored concrete blocks identical to the ones in the video, which measure 6 inches wide by 8 inches high and 16 inches long, only cost $2.98 each, depending on your location. If three of these are sufficient for what you need, then your garage tool storage system will only set you back $8.94. You may also find that placing just two of the blocks on top of each other will give you enough storage space without having to lift the tools up too high to get them in and out.

Options for aesthetic variations

While the standard gray concrete blocks are highly functional and look quite neat and tidy, you may be able to find ones in a muted red color, too. You can even use these blocks to make an incredibly easy-to-build garden bench, so you may want to grab a few more while you're shopping. You should find that the use of two or three blocks stacked will provide you with sufficient storage for your garden tools, but if you have a lot of implements, there's no reason why you can't make multiples of these storage units. You could either place them side by side along one wall, or put them in different corners of your garage.

If you want to get really fancy, you can actually paint the blocks in any color that you choose, as long as you follow the right procedure. Remember that these blocks are quite porous, so you first want to apply a concrete primer and then select an acrylic-latex paint, like Valspar latex barn and fence paint. You're not going to need a lot of paint, so if you have some left over from another DIY project, this would be a great way to use it up. You could use either a nap roller or a nylon brush to apply the paint to the concrete blocks. If you do decide to spruce up the blocks, you could even use a couple more to store brooms and mops in your utility room indoors.
