Whether it's just a few inches tall or a couple of feet off the ground, a stylish plant stand can really take your greenery to new heights. But unfortunately, buying stands for all of your plants can get expensive, especially when you have a large collection. If that's out of your budget, consider making your own from clothespins and wood beads — like YouTuber Patti J. Good does with this cheap and clever DIY.
With some common crafting materials and basic supplies, you can easily create one of these adorable stands, too. Head to Dollar Tree and pick up a Crafter's Square Clothespin Pack for $1.25. You'll also need a bag of 10-millimeter wooden beads and a round wooden coaster or disc, which you can find at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or another craft store. Alternatively, if you have extra wood and a saw, you could cut your own disc. To put it all together, you'll use a hot glue gun and a propane torch. Then for the base that will add a little extra height, you'll need a thick disc like this 5-inch Wood Circle Plaque by Make Market from Michael's (or something similar), four small pieces to use as legs, wood glue, and a popsicle stick or paint stirrer.
While those are the must-have supplies for this DIY, there are some optional ones, too. For example, try painting or staining the wood to match your design preferences. Alternatively, if you don't love an all-wood look, you could buy a colorful ceramic coaster or use glass beads instead of wooden ones.
Steps for making your clothespin plant stand
This beginner-friendly DIY plant stand would be perfect for showing off succulents, flowers, herbs, and other indoor greenery. But no matter which kinds of plants you have, the first step in the process is the same: Split your clothespins into two separate pieces. You can do this with your hands, but work carefully so the spring doesn't accidentally bounce into your face. If you want to paint or stain the pins, now's the time. You can do the same for the wood balls, disc, and legs, too.
Once they're dry, use the hot glue gun to attach a bead into the hole of each wooden clothespin. In total, you'll need around 32 individual pieces for the plant stand, so keep going until you hit that number. When every pin has a bead, attach the pieces to one another by adding a dab of hot glue on the bottom of a pin, then pressing another down on top of it. Repeat that process until the clothespins and beads create a full circle. Finish up by gluing the wood disc in the middle of the finished base and, if you like, carefully run a torch over the final product to char the wood a bit.
Ways to customize your clothespin plant stand
You also have the option of giving your plant stand more height. For that, you'll need the extra wood disc, small table legs, wood glue, and a popsicle stick. You can also use leftover scrap wood for a plant display stand to keep things budget-friendly. To add this extension, start by spreading wood glue on the underside of the clothespins with a popsicle stick and attach the wood circle plaque. On the bottom of that piece, arrange the four legs into a square and secure them with more glue. For this part of the project, it is best to paint or stain after assembly (rather than before), because it helps the wood glue adhere better. Once it's dry, use the torch to create that worn-in aesthetic.
Further, to steer away from the all-wood, rustic look and DIY a modern plant stand, you could buy a colorful ceramic coaster with a printed design (rather than a plain wood one) or paint the wood block an untraditional color. Another option? Using glass beads instead of wooden ones. If you go that route, you may need to sand the clothespins first. Then, clean the pins and the beads and let them dry. Finally, use an adhesive like Aleene's Jewelry and Metal Glue ($4.79 on Amazon) to secure each piece together. Customizing the stand with as much material, color, and texture as you like will result in a unique decor piece that your plants will love.
