Is A Mini-Split Air Conditioner More Or Less Expensive Than A Window Unit?

Most residences these days come with central heating and air unit already installed within the home. Yet, for those that don't have this luxury, you have to find another option. Usually, this is a window unit as it's the most common alternative and can be found in a wide variety of locations. However, another resource you can also use that you may not have thought of is a mini-split air conditioner.

For those who don't know, Fujitsu General states that this system operates as an air conditioner and a heater. Amongst many other characteristics, they are slightly different from a standard window unit in more ways than one. From installation to its cool adjustable features, the differences may surprise you. However, when deciding which one to go with, cost is one of the main factors to consider. So, is a mini-split air conditioner more or less expensive than a window unit?

Which unit costs more?

Let's first discuss a standard window unit. For starters, the installation process is exceedingly easy. All you have to do is find the location where you want it, place it in the window, and plug it in. It's as simple as that. Of course, there are other accessories and tips you can do to help with the balance as well as installation. Yet, for the most part, it's a quick DIY project. Many other features included with these are a simple fan and a full AC component. However, some models have a small heating system as well. Overall, Comfort Up estimates that these units typically cost about $500.

Now, let's examine mini-split conditioners. These types of systems act similar to both a window unit and central heating and air systems. As per Modernize, the installation process is more complex since a condenser outside your home leads into the house via an indoor air outlet. You can also opt to have up to five separate indoor outlets in different locations within your home. This is far more complicated than a standard window unit, as you will need a professional to install the system. However, it has more benefits as they all come with heating and air. Mini-split air conditioners can range anywhere from $1,500 to closer to $10,000, making them significantly more expensive than a window unit.
