The Chair Color That RuPaul Uses Which Designers Are Gaga Over

Known for his flamboyant style, RuPaul Andre Charles has chosen a fiery kitchen chair color that has designers in love. Seen in a tour with Architectural Digest, the Queen of Drag has kitchen chairs that showcase a similar spicy orange hue that can't be ignored. Founder of Kelling Designs, designer Emma Deterding says (via Homes & Gardens), "For me, the home should be filled with bright colors and bold patterns as they add personality to a space."

Along the Emmy-award-winner's lavish marble island countertop are three barrel-shaped bar stool chairs with an intense orange hue on their interior shiny leather-like material. A complementing floral design that mixes pink, blue, green, and white appears on the exterior of the chairs for a nature-inspired contrast.

Purchased in 2019 by RuPaul and his husband Georges LeBar, the glamorous estate was designed by celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard in a modern, eclectic fashion. While orange may not be a typical color to paint an entire room, it has an uplifting presence in many of RuPaul's spaces as a vivacious accent color. When mixed with subtle colors, orange exudes a unique energy throughout a room while arousing joy, hopefulness, and positivity.

Bright orange chairs create an invigorating contrast

While orange can be overwhelming on its own, designers are loving RuPaul's brave color choice. Emma Deterding says (via Homes & Gardens), "Orange shades are a great choice — they bring an uplifting feel during the day and can help create a cozy, relaxed atmosphere in the evening, showing how versatile this color is in a different light."

The breakfast nook is also an inviting, social space with a fiery flare among the vintage loop chairs, made famous by 1930s designer Frances Elkins. With an Old World, Hollywood Regency style, the vivid and whimsical chairs take focus against a classic black and white motif. Even though the tone of the chairs is fierce, the neutrality of the black and white stained oak wood floors — including the walls, molding, and window frames — allows the areas to feel cohesive.

While creating a sense of welcome, RuPaul's burnt orange chairs have properties related to stimulating the appetite as well. Similar in color to carrots and pumpkins, this makes for a complementing color within the model's sun-filled breakfast nook.

Orange is an ideal accent color

While various pops of orange are present throughout RuPaul's home, the happy hue corresponds with a variety of spaces. Often used in 1970s designs — including on wallpaper and furnishings — orange is a warm hue with a sense of renewal and optimism. While the exuberant color thrills RuPaul on a daily basis, applying it to your home might take some consideration. Ian Sanderson creative director Helen Sanderson said (via Homes & Gardens), "Orange is a wonderfully optimistic color but it is not one for the cautious." Whatever shade you choose, make sure you absolutely love it. With thoughtful planning, orange can be the absolute accent color.

Like the star of "RuPaul's Drag Race," furniture is a great way to implement the joyful color amidst a more neutral background or walls like gray or white, as pictured above. Other deeper shades of blue or green might also add balance alongside orange-infused elements. For a more vintage, '70s look, pair your orange pieces with brown, yellow, and tan colors. Additionally, if you prefer rich, colorful shades of furniture like teal or emerald green, you might incorporate a light, muted orange paint color upon an accent wall or other area — like cabinets and shelves — for an exhilarating vibe.
