What's Replacing Sage Green In 2026? The Trend Designers Are Choosing Instead

Sage green has long been one of the most popular paint colors used in interior design, thanks to its versatility and the way it can make your home feel calming. However, in 2026 it's starting to feel a little dated. Sage green is a pretty color, but many designers see it as the new millennial gray, suggesting that it's become safe and predictable and lacks the depth that other green hues can provide.

So, if you're looking for on-trend colors to replace sage green, there are plenty of options to choose from, with designers recommending everything from softer and cleaner greens, through richer tones, and even soft blues and muddy pinks. There's a move toward neutral colors that still have personality — earthy tones with more depth that feel fresher and yet even more timeless.

Of course, while trends for 2026 are moving away from sage green as a major player, it's not going away entirely. We're still seeing it used as an accent color to complement more on-trend paint choices. For example, it's proving particularly popular as a choice for bedding and upholstery.

What colors are trending instead of sage green?

The consensus from designers may be that sage green has had its day and is a color that's overrated in 2026, but there isn't one specific paint color angling to take its place. Cathryn Erickson of Cathryn Lindsey Design told Homes & Gardens, "That specific soft sage/eucalyptus tone has been done, and it's time to give it a break." She suggests that she'll be focusing on "greens with more depth, those that lean into dusty blue-greens or earthy brown-greens feel fresher and more timeless moving forward."

Anabella Mainetti, CEO of Mainefacturerd, has a similar viewpoint, "The more desaturated versions that lean gray read as a pandemic-era palette. Softer, cleaner greens — like olive, eucalyptus, or moss feel much more uplifting." You can see this in 2026's official paint colors of the year, where Valspar's Warm Eucalyptus (pictured above) features as a tone that's still warming but with a lot more depth.

As mentioned above, we're also seeing trends that move us away from green altogether, whilst still creating a similar feel to the calming tones of sage green. Founder and principal designer of Stay Interiors, Nishia Shubert told Good Housekeeping that she recommends colors such as Sherwin Williams Doeskin 6044, saying, "A muddy pink like this color is my new go-to for rooms in place of a sage green. It's as calming as sage and equally gender-neutral, without the overt sweetness typically associated with pink." Overall, the trend is for bolder colors that add a little more punch to your living spaces, but still have plenty of depth.
